Square Footage Calculator
What is Square Footage?
Square footage is a measurement of area expressed in square feet. One square foot is equal to a square that is one foot on each side. It's commonly used in real estate, construction, and home improvement to describe the size of rooms, houses, properties, and materials.
Why Calculate Square Footage?
Calculating square footage is important for many reasons:
- Determining property value and price per square foot
- Planning renovations and estimating material costs
- Sizing HVAC systems, flooring, paint, and other materials
- Meeting building code requirements
- Calculating property taxes
How to Measure Square Footage
To measure square footage accurately:
- Use a tape measure, laser measure, or measuring wheel
- Measure the length and width of the space in feet (or convert from other units)
- For rectangular spaces, multiply length by width
- For irregular spaces, divide the area into regular shapes, calculate each separately, and add them together
- For circular areas, use the formula: Area = π × radius²
- For triangular areas, use the formula: Area = (base × height) ÷ 2
Square Footage Formulas
Rectangle/Square
Area = Length × Width
Circle
Area = π × Radius²
Area = π × (Diameter ÷ 2)²
Triangle
Area = (Base × Height) ÷ 2
Trapezoid
Area = ((Base1 + Base2) ÷ 2) × Height
Common Conversion Factors
From | To Square Feet | Multiply By |
---|---|---|
Square Inches | Square Feet | 0.00694 |
Square Yards | Square Feet | 9 |
Square Meters | Square Feet | 10.764 |
Acres | Square Feet | 43,560 |
Hectares | Square Feet | 107,639 |
Tips for Accurate Measurements
- Measure to the nearest 1/8 inch or 0.01 foot for precision
- For rooms, measure from the inside of the walls
- For properties, measure from the outside of the exterior walls
- Exclude areas that aren't considered living space (unfinished basements, garages, etc.) when calculating home square footage
- For complex shapes, create a floor plan and divide the space into simple geometric shapes
- Double-check all measurements and calculations
Applications of Square Footage Calculations
Flooring
When purchasing flooring materials, add 5-10% extra to account for waste, cuts, and future repairs.
Paint
One gallon of paint typically covers 350-400 square feet. Calculate wall area by measuring perimeter × height.
Real Estate
Price per square foot = Total price ÷ Square footage. This helps compare properties of different sizes.
Landscaping
Calculate yard square footage to determine seed, sod, mulch, or gravel quantities.
