About Dice Rolling
Understanding Dice Notation
Dice notation is a system used to represent different dice rolls in tabletop games. The standard format is:
ndX+m
- n is the number of dice to roll
- X is the number of sides on each die
- +m is an optional modifier added to the result
For example, "3d6+2" means "roll three six-sided dice and add 2 to the result."
Common Dice Types
Different tabletop games use various types of dice:
- d4 - Four-sided die (tetrahedron)
- d6 - Standard six-sided die (cube)
- d8 - Eight-sided die (octahedron)
- d10 - Ten-sided die (pentagonal trapezohedron)
- d12 - Twelve-sided die (dodecahedron)
- d20 - Twenty-sided die (icosahedron)
- d100/d% - Percentile dice (typically rolled with two d10s)
Probability in Dice Rolls
The probability distribution of dice rolls depends on the number and type of dice. A single die has a uniform distribution (each face has an equal chance), but multiple dice create a bell curve distribution, with middle values being more likely than extreme values.
