What is Area?

Area is the amount of space inside the boundary of a flat (2-dimensional) object such as a triangle or circle. It is measured in square units, such as square meters (m²), square feet (ft²), or square inches (in²).

Area Formulas for Common Shapes

Rectangle

Area = Length × Width

A rectangle with length 5 m and width 3 m has an area of 15 m².

Square

Area = Side² (Side squared)

A square with sides of 4 cm has an area of 16 cm².

Circle

Area = π × Radius²

A circle with radius 3 m has an area of approximately 28.27 m².

Triangle

Area = ½ × Base × Height

A triangle with base 6 cm and height 4 cm has an area of 12 cm².

Trapezoid

Area = ½ × (a + c) × h

Where a and c are the parallel sides and h is the height.

Parallelogram

Area = Base × Height

Where height is the perpendicular distance between parallel sides.

Ellipse

Area = π × a × b

Where a and b are the semi-major and semi-minor axes.

Regular Polygon

Area = ¼ × n × s² × cot(π/n)

Where n is the number of sides and s is the side length.
