What is A1C?

Hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) is a blood test that measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. It's one of the most common tests used to diagnose prediabetes and diabetes, and is also used to monitor how well you're managing your diabetes.

How to Use This Calculator

Our A1C calculator allows you to convert between A1C percentage and estimated average glucose (eAG) levels. Simply enter either your A1C percentage or your average blood glucose level, and the calculator will provide the corresponding value along with a risk assessment.

Understanding Your Results

A1C Levels and Diabetes Risk:

  • Below 5.7%: Normal
  • 5.7% to 6.4%: Prediabetes
  • 6.5% or higher: Diabetes

The Science Behind A1C

When glucose enters your bloodstream, it binds to hemoglobin, a protein in your red blood cells. The A1C test measures the percentage of your hemoglobin that has glucose attached to it. Since red blood cells typically live for about 3 months, the A1C test reflects your average blood glucose levels over that period.

A1C to eAG Conversion Formula

The formula used to convert A1C to estimated Average Glucose (eAG) is:

eAG (mg/dL) = (28.7 × A1C) - 46.7

eAG (mmol/L) = (1.59 × A1C) - 2.59

Limitations of A1C Testing

While A1C is a valuable tool, it has some limitations. Certain conditions can affect the accuracy of A1C results, including anemia, kidney disease, liver disease, and certain hemoglobin variants. Additionally, A1C may not be reliable for people who have had recent blood loss or transfusions.

When to See a Doctor

If your A1C level is 5.7% or higher, it's important to consult with a healthcare provider. They can help you understand your results and develop a plan to manage your blood sugar levels.
